Innovative soundware creation and sound design methods
At UVI, every instrument and effect is the result of intense research and experimentation. Our process combines expert craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology to deliver not only lifelike accuracy, but also innovative features that push the boundaries of sound design.
Soundware Development: The Art of Crafting Unique Sounds
The backbone of UVI soundbanks lies in a powerful combination of scripting, DSP, and UI/UX innovation within our Falcon environment, the UVI engine. Recordings are structured in the UVI engine to maximize efficiency, realism, and versatility, then augmented with advanced scripting to deliver natural response, dynamic articulations, and deep sound manipulation possibilities, maximizing ease of use and creative potential. Finally, UI (user interfaces) and UX (user experience) are refined to create intuitive experiences, ensuring both beginners and professionals can shape sound effortlessly.
Sound recording and processing
The foundation of each of our soundbanks is the recording of instruments. We pay particular attention to the quality of these recordings, using crafted techniques adapted to each instrument and top-tier audio equipment, ensuring the highest quality sound right out of the box. Every recording is carefully cleaned, cut, and refined manually to preserve its natural character while eliminating unwanted noise. Finally, our team applies proprietary techniques to enhance clarity, warmth, and expressiveness while maintaining the authenticity of the original sound.
Beyond technical development, our sound design team fine-tunes each soundbank to deliver a unique sonic identity. One of the challenges for our team is to craft high-quality presets that fully exploit the sound profile of the product, while leaving room for users to impart their own signature. Particular attention is paid to the expressiveness and dynamism of the presets, which are often crafted towards specific genres while allowing creators to adapt them individually. Finally, preset macros are always provided, delivering intuitive control over key parameters, and enabling musicians to take creative control without having to dig.
A Deep Commitment
to Research and Innovation
Beyond soundware, our dedication to innovation is core to our software developments, from our flagship synthesizer Falcon, to our cutting-edge effects.
Describing the creative and R&D process behind UVI plugins is not always easy, but there are a number of patterns and ingredients consistent in helping us find creative success.
Cultivating Innovation: A garden of ideas
Passion and curiosity are the key ingredients to start the creative process. They drive us to stay at the forefront of audio technology, exploring the cutting-edge of research—even to the point of funding PhD theses.
The creative process is similar to growing a garden: ideas are seeds that we plant, nurture, and grow over time. Through small proof-of-concepts, some ideas grow quickly, while others can take years to mature, ensuring a constant cycle of evolution and renewal.
Harvesting Ideas, Crafting Products
Building on this rich landscape of ideas—some nurtured over years—we create room for fresh inspiration to take root while refining and distilling existing concepts into tangible products. By identifying the most promising directions, we work collaboratively to shape them into offerings that are both innovative and accessible.
Polishing Ideas: Shaping UX
User experience is one of the most important steps in the plugin creation process, similar to cutting a gem to reveal its brilliance. This process involves several key elements:
When executed well, this process not only elevates the product’s functionality, but also plays a significant role in its commercial success, reflecting the love and passion invested in the creation of UVI plugins.
P.S.: We would be remiss not to acknowledge the profound impact of Alan Kay’s landmark 1982 talk, “Creative Think.”> From his insights, we draw inspiration in the following words:
"The best way to predict the future is to invent it."
"Find a central metaphor that's so powerful that everything aligns to it. At that point, design meetings become unnecessary, and the product essentially designs itself. The metaphor should be clear, concise, and fun."
"Prioritize content over form—go for fun."
These principles continue to inspire and guide our whole creative process.
